Data is the lifeblood of business, and ensuring that users are able to access data at all times is essential. Typically, organisations have data in a variety of locations - PCs, laptops, mobile devices, network attached storage etc. By consolidating, centralising and virtualising storage resources, storage space can be maximised effectively, whilst the data security and integrity can be managed effectively from central locations.
Typically virtual storage comes in the form of a Storage Area Network (SAN). SANs are traditionally very expensive, and have previously been used almost exclusively by enterprise and multi-national organisations. Thankfully, the technology now exists to virtualise storage environments without the need to invest in expensive, dedicated hardware.
