Excellent white paper by Benny Tritsch: "Things You Always Wanted to Know About Windows Profile Management"
Immidio's Benny Tritsch (we also know him as one of a handful of people who've presented at all eight BriForums!) has posted a white paper entitled "Things You Always Wanted to Know About Windows Profile Management" today on his blog. During BriForum last month, Benny, Kevin Goodman, and Shawn Bass gave a similar presentation with the goal of getting all the information out in the open at one time, rather than listening to fragments here and there. This white paper builds on...

Brian’s wrong… about VDI and Local Storage.
A couple of weeks ago Brian wrote an article titled “F*** the SAN. VDI storage should be local!” It had about 40 comments and 3000 views in its first day, showing the emotion and interest in this topic. It really sparked a small war within the community (as seen by the comments section) and a number of debates about the various use cases for SAN, where it fits, and where it doesn’t. I commented in favor of local disk, but only when it makes sense, and with appropriate...

Why aren't VMware and RSA working together to create the ultimate secure virtual desktop environment?
RSA and VMware both have legions of crazed fanatical customers, and as it happens both companies are owned by EMC. This was the topic of one of the side conversations I had at BriForum last month. We talked about how it's weird that the two companies haven't done more together in the desktop space. (Unfortunately I forget who I had this conversation with, but I'm sure that this was an idea that someone else put in my head. Feel free to email me to claim it!) One of the main reasons...

“Help me manage users and then the devices will take care of themselves.” What does VMware mean when they say this?
“Help me manage users and then the devices will take care of themselves.” This is a quote from VMware's COO Tod Nielsen during the Q&A portion of the company's 2Q 2010 earnings call. (Thanks to Alessandro @virtualization.info for the great coverage .) Continuing yesterday's conversation about the near-term opportunities for VDI to transform desktop delivery in the next few years, what do you think Tod's answer means? I've written quite a bit about how desktop...

In 2010, desktop virtualization is still tactical. The Win7 opportunity has been missed.
I gave about 20 speeches about desktop virtualization in 2009, and one of the core tenants of those was that Windows 7 and desktop virtualization are sort of “codependent” on each other. I felt since most companies were still on Windows XP, there wasn’t really an incentive to go through the huge disruption and effort of desktop virtualization just to end up on Windows XP again (since that would have to be upgraded to Windows 7 at some point). On the other side of that point, I...
